Handle more complex farm underwriting exposures and manage risk selection and pricing in assigned territories. Provide advanced underwriting, technical support and service to assigned agents and underwriting team members.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Maintain extensive knowledge of farming operations and exposures
  • Examine, identify and evaluate complex exposures and accept, decline, modify risks
  • Evaluate exposures and use internal pricing to ensure the right price for the exposure or modify the risk with risk mitigating endorsements
  • Develop and implement strategic initiatives that support growth, profit, retention and service objectives that increase the value of the agency relationships and ensuring our company is the carrier of choice
  • Communicate and monitor agency action plans, agent training support and assist underwriters with agency management training
  • Assist in training underwriters to improve the level of farm expertise
  • Travel to the field to train agents on underwriting farm exposures and make presentations to the agents on farm underwriting initiatives
  • Assist in the quality control of the underwriting staff
  • Minimum Skills and Competencies:

  • Bachelor Degree or in-lieu of degree equivalent education, training and work-related experience
  • 7+ years of farm/agricultural underwriting experience
  • Must be able and willing to travel to agency visits, functions, and training as requested
  • Must possess effective verbal and written communication skills
  • Ability to identify and describe complex exposures and hazards to consider in making an underwriting decision
  • Proven ability to identify and describe major perils insured under the farm contracts and endorsements
  • Must perform well in high-energy, dynamic and team-oriented environments
  • Effective organization and time management skills with the ability to work under pressure and adhere to project deadlines
  • Excellent interpersonal skills with the ability to establish working relationships with individuals at varying levels within the organization
  • Demonstrated integrity within a professional environment
  • Ability to adapt to new situations and learn quickly 
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint)
  • Desired Skills:

  • Agribusiness and Farm Insurance Specialist (AFIS) designation
  • 10+ years of insurance experience
  • Demonstrates leadership skills
  • Public speaking and/or experience training large or small groups
  • Outstanding technical, analytical, decision making and problem solving skills
